Tips to Manage Bernese Mountain dog Shedding

The Bernese mountain dog is one of the hot favorites among dog lovers who prefer a large yet affectionate breed. These large breeds have rightfully earned their names in the top contenders list, owing to their loving nature, gentle temperament, and their majestic tri-color coat. Lovingly referred to as the “Gentle Giants”, the Bernese mountain dog can be a pride for any owner. However, things can become ugly, as the tri-color coat that gives it such a unique look does not always stay its best. As an owner, you need to manage it.

Often, their shedding makes dog lovers think twice about whether it would be the best alternative for their homes. Things can worsen for people who have allergies, and in such situations, the Bernese mountain dog isn’t the best option to bring home. However, if you have made up your mind on getting a Bernese, then these tips should help you manage the shedding.

Bernese mountain dogs are heavy shedders

As mentioned before, they will shed a lot. They tend to have a thick coat, which again has two layers. The first one is the soft undercoat, which is responsible for regulating temperature, and the longer and coarser coat outside safeguards it from dirt and moisture. Understandably, since they hail from a cold place, Switzerland, their double coat protects them from the chills. No sooner is spring and fall season in sight than they will start shedding. It is a part of their routine, preparing for the changing seasons. There may be other reasons also that make them shed so heavily. Let us look at each of these aspects in detail:

Seasonal coat changes: Just as we mentioned, with the changing patterns of the weather, their undercoat starts adjusting automatically. Therefore, during the spring season, they shed their dense winter undercoat. When it is the fall season, they again shed to make way for a new, thicker coat, preparing them for winter. It is during these two seasons, you will notice their hair scattered everywhere in your home.

  • Role of genetics: As we know, Berners were designated to work in the cold climates of Switzerland. Shedding is very normal and is a part of their DNA. They are born with the ability to let their bodies adjust to the ongoing temperature.
  • Stress and health issues: Sudden health issues can also lead to excessive hair loss in them. Other factors that can speed up shedding include poor diet, skin infections, and allergies, which can make the dog stressed out.

Expecting the unexpected

It is better to be warned rather than to repent later. With a Bernese in your house, you should remain prepared for hair everywhere. Some of the common places would include the couch, clothes, and carpets. Expect them to be found under furniture, and do not be surprised if you find them even in your coffee mug. Thus, if you are a person who loves to keep the house neat and clean, you have to invest in grooming for the Bernese, and that too at regular intervals.

Grooming tips

After reading thus far, it might appear, keeping a Bernese and managing its shedding is a huge affair. But the good news is, it isn’t as bad as it sounds if you follow the grooming tips as mentioned here accurately.

  • Frequent brushing: By brushing the them2-3 times a week, you can take care of the shedding. During the heavy shedding seasons, the brushing should be done on a daily basis. Thankfully, you can find several brushes that are customized for these dogs, and you can use them to good effect. Regular brushing will reduce the amount of hair the dog drops around the house, and it will also help it to maintain its healthy skin and coat.
  • Occasional bathing: Ensure to bathe your pet at an interval of 6-8 weeks. You should not overdo the bathing as it can result in drying their skin out. While bathing them, be cautious of the shampoo you use.

By following the above tips, you can surely make the shedding much less, though you cannot stop it completely.

Get a good-quality vacuum cleaner

Let the vacuum cleaner be your savior when the “Gentle giant” is roaming around your home. Consider the models that are renowned for strong suction abilities, HEPA filters, and pet hair attachments.

Give the Bern a balanced diet

Many dog owners do not realize, the diet they offer to their dogs tends to reflect on the dog’s coat quality. The inclusion of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids is known to support skin health and diminish excessive shedding.

Go for regular vet checkups

Earlier, we mentioned, health issues can also trigger heavy shedding. Therefore, you must take the Bern to a vet for regular checkups. This would also help the Bern to stay away from skin infections, allergies, or any other health issues.

Weighing the factors

Undoubtedly, you can find the best companion in a Bernese mountain dog, but you have to be prepared to deal with the “mess”. Precisely speaking, it is impossible to keep a Bern around without its fur. Most Bernese mountain dog owners are however not complaining. According to them, they are prepared to take the ordeal in exchange for the loyalty, affection, and companionship these dogs bring with them.

That answers the question of whether a Bernese mountain dog is right for you. Once you are ready to do the extra cleaning, regular brushing of the dog, take time out for visits to the vet, and of course, if you can provide them enough room for these large breeds, then you can go for it.
