The Unique Traits of a Bernese Mountain Dog

It’s not a surprise this majestic, noble breed has maintained its popularity since being recognized as an official breed in 1937 by the AKC. Originally bred for strength and intelligence as a working farm dog on the pastures of Switzerland, it became known as a perfect family dog who was particularly gentle with kids.

Farmers depended on this drafting breed to pull fully loaded wagons many times its weight, herd cattle, and provide protection even during the cold winter months. Of course, industrial farming soon replaced these hard-working canines, and their number declined drastically. However, starting in 1926, Americans began the process to reestablish the Berners’ popularity, succeeding after two Bernese Mountain Dogs saved their owner from being attacked by a 350-pound deer.

Impressive Strength and Size

As a large breed, it’s not surprising that Bernese Mountain Dogs are as strong as they are. Weighing between 70-115 pounds, depending on the sex. This canine is sure to impress when combined with its soft, thick coat and iconic markings. Given its size and general laid-back attitude, this dog is happy with most housing situations. Even making for an ideal city dog because he does not need a large yard for exercise. He will need to burn that energy by taking a brisk walk in the cool morning and evening hours. Keep in mind that they are a playful breed with plenty of energetic intelligence and will require regular exercise and play sessions to keep them from getting into mischief.

As puppies, the Berner will have a limited amount of energy to expend; however, as they grow, they’ll continue to have more to spare. They are thought to be a perfect companion because they exemplify a healthy work-life balance. This is a dog that knows how to rest and relax. Additionally, whether it is playing or relaxing, it keeps a constant watch. Garnering a reputation as a great family dog. Young at heart, but with an ever-watchful eye, think of this dog as your second set of eyes when getting chores done while the kids are outside playing.

Berners have shown they still have the natural talent and skill to do what they were originally bred for in the Swiss Alps, and if you’re looking for a fun way to expend some of their energy, try agility training or drafting and carting. They will not hesitate to take the opportunity to show off their intelligence and strength to you.

Thick Double Coat

A Bernese Mountain Dog coat comes in a distinct tricolored pattern of jet black, clear white, and rust. These distinctive markings are hallmarks of the breed, giving them the quality of majestic royalty when combined with the knowing intelligence in their eyes. Their fur has a double coat, making them ideal for cold climates, so don’t be surprised if they suddenly prefer to spend a good chunk of their time outdoors when it snows. Unsurprisingly, on days that exceed 75 degrees, provide your Berner a way to stay cool in the hot summer months. Furthermore, be sure you can recognize the signs of heat exhaustion.

With such thick hair, it is ideal for them to be brushed once a week to remove dead hair, stimulate hair follicles, and encourage the production of essential oils. This will also help keep their shedding to a minimum. These dogs do not need to be trimmed or clipped, but regular washing with a detangling shampoo will help their coat keep its shine and deep, bold coloring. Berners tend to have allergies to common ingredients found in dog food, such as chicken, but a salmon-based food is the most beneficial. It really makes their coat have a healthy shine.

Loyal Personality

More than anything, it’s the affectionate disposition of this large breed that truly makes it man’s best friend. This friendly giant full of laid-back energy thrives on attention. However, its even temper makes it ideal for any size household. He may compete for attention, but with good training, this intelligent, hard worker will soon find his stride and contentedly spend his time bringing smiles to your family pack. The Berner is a wonderful balance of bursting energy combined with lazy companionship.

To make the most of this dog’s potential, expose it to a variety of people, places, and situations to develop a healthy personality that embraces the world around it with confidence. It is not uncommon for the Bernese to develop a fair amount of anxiety if not exposed to a variety of social situations. With its distinctive markings and general friendliness, be ready for people to take notice and even ask for pictures with your little celebrity.

It’s not a big barker but does tend to alert you to potential dangers and barks frequently during playtime. However, by introducing them to your world and establishing yourself as pack leader, their watchful, playful disposition can truly blossom. This is a dog that does not know its own size and strength when it comes to expressing its love for you. Thinking it is still a lapdog and accidentally knocking you over by leaning against you in their overwhelming affection for you.

Is the Berner the Right Breed for You?

The Bernese Mountain Dog has not regained its place in popularity by accident. Given that they are patient with kids, ever watchful and equally playful, loyal to their owners, moderately quiet, and have the best balance of laidback energy, who wouldn’t want a Berner to brighten their day with their expressive little eyebrowed faces?
