Common health issues of English Cream Golden Retrievers and their prevention

The English Cream Golden Retriever holds a special place in the hearts of pet owners. Well, the reason is not limited to its adorable personality but mainly due to its calm and affectionate nature. Yet, like most dog breeds, these beautiful dogs also have a fair share of health risks.

So, for all the proud English cream golden retriever owners or those who are planning to introduce one to their families soon, it would be better to understand the health aspects of the breed and to do the needful so that it enjoys a long and healthy life. First, let us explore the most common health issues in English cream golden retrievers, spotting them early, and the preventive measures.

Hip and elbow dysplasia

It is a genetic condition where the hip or elbow joints fail to fit properly into their sockets. As a result, the dog deals with excessive pain. It may even lead to arthritis and mobility issues after a while. Keep an eye on your favorite pet, and if you spot it limping or using one leg more often, it is time to visit a vet. Similarly, if it shows signs of stiffness after rest and finds it difficult to rise or climb stairs, it can be a sign of the abovementioned problems.

Preventive measures would mainly include choosing breeders who repeatedly screen for joint health using OFA or other certifications. You can also ensure the dog is maintaining an ideal body weight, which can reduce the effect on joints significantly. By offering joint supplements, like glucosamine, and Omega-3s. The above issues can be minimized considerably.

Cancer

Though it sounds unfortunate, cancer is one of the leading causes of death in this particular breed. A specific blood vessel cancer known as Hemangiosarcoma, and lymphoma, which is a cancer of the lymphatic system, are very common in this breed.

Consider it a red flag when you notice unexplained lethargy in the dog. The other symptoms that can indicate the development of cancer include pale gums, swollen lymph nodes, unexplained weight loss, and loss of appetite.

Preventive measures include periodic visits and blood work at the Vet’s office, especially when they are over the age of 5. Ensure the dog is not exposed to harmful chemicals and secondhand smoke. While feeding them, keep an eye on the food, and it should contain immune-boosting nutrients.

Cardiac problems

English creams are also vulnerable to Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis (SAS). It is a hereditary heart disease where the aorta becomes narrow; as a result, the heart finds it difficult to pump blood. The worrying aspect is that the symptoms are not visible initially, and once they get severe, the symptoms are evident.

If the dog is suffering from the aforementioned issue, it will faint regularly, especially after exercising. Then again, you will notice it is always low on energy, has an irregular heartbeat, and can also cough and find difficulty breathing.

Here again, the best way of preventing the onset of cardiac issues is to get pups from breeders who regularly conduct cardiac screenings. Also, you should never overexert the pup, particularly when the temperatures are high. By scheduling early and regular cardiac exams, the condition can be checked.

Eye-related issues

English cream golden retrievers are also vulnerable to several eye-related health issues. Cataracts for once is a major problem for them. Then they are also susceptible to progressive retinal atrophy that can lead to gradual vision loss.

Cloudy or blush eyes can be a symptom of the above eye problems setting in. The dog may also bump into things since it is not viewing things properly. Lastly, if it is reluctant to go out at night, it can also be a symptom of an eye-related health problem.

Preventing your affectionate dog from suffering eye problems requires you to choose pups from breeders who regularly check their eyes. Then again, yearly eye tests by a vet ophthalmologist can also help. By supplying it with antioxidant-rich diets, you can offer considerable support to its eye health.

Skin allergies and sensitivities

English cream golden retrievers, particularly the ones with the lighter coats, are known to have very sensitive skin. Thus, they can become easy prey to environmental, food-related, and seasonal allergies.

You can be assured that the dog is suffering from skin allergies if you observe it is licking or chewing its paws many times. Red and flaky patches can also be visible on the skin. Owing to the allergy, the dog may also suffer from regular ear infections. Lastly, unexplained hair loss and hot spots are clearer indications that the dog is suffering from some form of allergy.

Skin allergies can be prevented by offering them a grain-free diet. The use of hypoallergenic shampoos, regular grooming, and allergy testing can also help them in overcoming or keeping such allergies at bay.

Hypothyroidism

Just like their human counterparts, dogs can suffer from hypothyroidism. The thyroid gland cannot produce the necessary hormones. It can often lead to fatigue. Weight gain and coat issues. By performing blood tests, you can know whether the dog is suffering from the condition. If necessary, you can introduce the dog to lifetime hormone replacement therapy. Lastly, regular monitoring can ensure it gets the right dosage, and the symptoms can be checked regularly.

Ear infections

Blame it on their floppy ears and their incredible passion for water, English cream golden retrievers are very vulnerable to ear infections. The presence of bacteria, yeast or even trapped moisture can lead to such problems.

Once affected with ear infections, the dog will keep shaking its head, scratch its ears consistently, and foul odor can be emitted from the ears along with discharge. Lastly, redness and swelling can also be visible. For preventing ear infections, you have to shoulder the responsibility of keeping your ears thoroughly clean after bathing or swimming sessions. Weekly ear cleaning with vet-approved solutions, trimming the hair around the ear canal can also help.

Epilepsy (Seizures)

Although rare, some English cream golden retrievers may inherit epilepsy, which leads them to experience unpredictable seizures. It is not as difficult to spot signs of epilepsy, as the dog will frequently collapse, show confusion in its behavior, it may also become unresponsive, and display temporary loss of bowel control.

Being an inherited condition, you can do nothing to prevent it. However, there are lifelong treatments that you can initiate for their sake. Also, try to reduce stress as it might trigger seizures unexpectedly.

A myth buster

Often, dog owners tend to get confused between the American and English Creams and thus they believe, English cream golden retrievers are healthy than their American counterparts. Well, that is not entirely true. While the English cream has a slight edge over its American cousin and has lower cancer rates, being Golden Retrievers, they do possess all the health risks and require care. By staying informed and proactive, you can surely reduce health risks, detect health issues early, and give the dog the quality of life they deserve.
